What is Friday Online?

A series of online professional development events offered on Friday mornings from 9:00 to 10:30 am via Centra. Topics focus on competencies related to communication, technology, education/teaching, personal effectiveness, and important human resource issues for supervisors. The current schedule of topics is listed below.

How do I enroll?

  • Go to http://eit.tamu.edu/centra.html and click the top link to log in with your Centra username and password.
  • If you do not have a Centra username and password, click the “Register for” link and create them for yourself.
  • After logging in you will see links on the upper left side of the page. Click the ‘“Enrollment” link to see a list of folders.
  • Click on the "Friday Online" folder to see topics and dates for events.
  • Click on the word "Enroll" to enroll in an event.
  • For a demonstration of how to enroll, go to http://eit.tamu.edu/JJ/centra/EnrollInFriOnline.html

How do I make sure my computer will run Centra?

Make sure that the computer you’ll use to participate is set up to run Centra by running the system check before the event.

  • Go to http://eit.tamu.edu/centra.html and click the top link to get to the log in page.
  • Click the "System Check" link in the black bar below the Texas Cooperative Extension logo and follow the instructions. Have your microphone and speakers or headset plugged in to the computer so that you can complete the audio check as well.
  • If your computer doesn’t successfully pass the system check contact EIT at CentraHelp@ag.tamu.edu or 979.845.9689

How do I attend an event?

On the day of the event go to http://eit.tamu.edu/centra.html and click the top link to get to the log in page, then log in with your centra user ID and password. Fifteen minutes before the start time click the My Schedule link in the upper left corner. Finally, click the Attend link to the right of the Friday Online event to begin the event.

10/24/08 - Centra: A Web Tool for Synchronous eLearning

  • Description: Many are using Centra for meetings or lecture presentations, but would like to increase the levels of interaction and participation. In this seminar participants will experience firsthand the techniques, tools and activities that serve to enhance collaboration, interaction, and retention in Centra meetings and virtual classrooms.
  • Target Audience: Anyone in AgriLife that is using or is interested in using Centra as a virtual classroom or meeting room to save time, money, and travel.
  • Facilitators: Jennifer Jahedkar and Susanna Coppernoll

10/31/08 - Moodle: A Web Tool for Asynchronous eLearning

  • Description: Moodle is an online tool for building tutorials, workshops, and courses for self directed or instructor facilitated learning. In the first of two seminars on this topic, participants will learn what Moodle is, what can be done in Moodle, and how they can access Moodle. Courses currently available for professional development and for clientele outreach will be showcased.
  • Target Audience: Anyone in AgriLife that has been creating or is considering creating online courses.

Friday Online topics- November 2008

11/07/08 - Moodle: Organizing, Managing, Reporting

  • Description: This picks up where the last seminar leaves off. In this session participants will learn when and how to create instructor led and self paced courses, explore different ways to organize a course in Moodle, compare available Activities and Resources, and use Moodle to retrieve data to track students’ participation and progress.
  • Target Audience: Anyone in AgriLife that has been creating or is considering creating online courses.
  • Facilitator: Jennifer Jahedkar

11/14/08 - eLearning Design and Development I

  • Description: Centra and Moodle are tools for the delivery of elearning, but what about the design and development that takes place before the delivery? Using Centra and Moodle together, participants will learn about design and development for effective elearning. At the November 14 Centra and overview and introduction to design and development will be given. Then during the next week participants will go through (at their convenience) a course in Moodle that will provide more in depth learning on design and development. The November 21 Centra seminar will be a capstone session on design and development for elearning. NOTE: Participants will attend 2 Centra sessions and complete about 4 hrs of self directed learning in Moodle
  • Target Audience: Anyone in AgriLife that has been creating or is considering creating online courses.
